Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Global Leadership Award

One valued at $72,000

The recipient of this international student award will receive $18,000 each year, over four years. The recipient must be outstanding academically and have made notable contributions to extracurricular or community activities. 

  • Criteria

    The recipient must: 

    • Be in their final year of secondary school, entering their first undergraduate university degree.
    • Be studying in a secondary school outside of Canada.
    • Demonstrate personal leadership and excellence in extracurricular activities beyond academic requirements, and/or significant contributions to their community or family.
    • Have an excellent academic record—an 'A' average or equivalent grading based on their secondary school evaluation. 

    Please note: If the recipient's Canadian immigration status changes, the value of the award will change.

  • Application process
    To apply for the Global Leadership Award: 

    1. Complete the online application in your Ontario Tech applicant portal. Log in using your Ontario Tech student number and password (your date of birth in MMDDYYYY format). Printed application forms will be discarded.

    2. Submit a maximum of two reference letters. View the reference guidelines. Submit completed reference letters to:

    3. Applications must be submitted no later than Thursday, February 25, 2021. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed, nor will applicants be notified.

    Successful applicants will be notified in May 2021.

    Please note: 

    • You must have applied to Ontario Tech University to be considered for this award. Apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre by Sunday, January 31, 2021 to be considered for admission to competitive programs such as Nursing or Computer Science.
    • Apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre by Wednesday, March 31, 2021 to be considered for admission to all other programs.
    • Make sure to apply for the appropriate scholarship in full—fill out all required sections of the application and follow the instructions regarding formatting and maximum word length.
  • Reference letters

    Reference letters are used as an important method for determining the quality of your application. In order for your application to be complete, you must submit a maximum of two reference letters; one community and one school. To ensure your reference letters are accepted, please review the reference guidelines.

    Community reference

    Your community reference should be written by someone other than a family member or close friend, who has observed you in your public life and is aware of your various involvements. Where possible, this reference should be written on official letterhead.

    School reference

    Your school reference must be written by a teacher, counsellor or principal, who has observed you in your public life and is aware of your various involvements. This reference must be written on official letterhead.

    References must be received no later than Thursday, February 25, 2021.
